Fashion beyond feathers: a guide for designers
Collective Fashion Justice’s new guide to using next-gen materials and fabric manipulation techniques to achieve the light, fluid, voluminous characteristics often considered exclusive to feathers, while avoiding their negative ethical and environmental impacts.
Our new guide (available for download at the bottom of this article) is a design-led and solutions-focused resource to support designers in replacing decorative feathers with lower impact materials that do not compromise on aesthetics or performance.
It includes:
An exploration of the aesthetic qualities of feathers that are both valuable and replaceable through other materials, supported by designer interviews, to ground material solutions in design needs
Interviews with designers already using feather-free materials to achieve similar aesthetic goals, unpacking their design process and material selection considerations
Step-by-step guides through different fabric manipulation techniques that can be used to replicate the aesthetic qualities of feathers
Inspiration to spark further vast and diverse ways of producing garments with qualities shared with those made from feathers
A case study exploring a dress made using multiple fabric manipulation techniques highlighted in the guide
